PRINCE VALIANT "HASTING HOUSE SERIES"

These books have been out of print for decades and were primarily marketed to children.
Text adaptation by Max Trell with illustrations from Foster. There are also special library editions. Valuable books, around USD 40 each.

Hastings House/Nostalgia Press Prince Valiant volumes - first published in the 50's and briefly reprinted in the 70's - are sentimental favorites.
One reason for our fondness is the fact that Hal Foster himself used the Hastings House series (there were 7 in all) as inspiration for his ongoing work, preferring them to his own originals as reference!

The Hastings Series
1. Prince Valiant in the Days of King Arthur, 1951 (PV #1-103)
2. Prince Valiant Fights Atilla the Hun, ca 1952 (PV #103-169)
3. Prince Valiant on the Inland Sea, H.H. ca. 1953 (PV #169-251)
4. Prince Valiant's Perilous Voyage, H.H. ca. 1954 (PV #251-350)
5. Prince Valiant and the Golden Princess, H.H. ca. 1955 (PV #350-434)
6. Prince Valiant in the New World, H.H. ca. 1956 (PV #467-70,508-593)
7. Prince Valiant and the Three Challengers, H.H. ca. 1957 (PV #593-683)

Prince Valiant

“Prince Valiant, Vol. 6: 1947-1948,” which is coming soon from Fantagraphics, contains a special treat – a 20” x 13” color foldout of the original Birth of Arn page hand-watercolored by Foster.

Hand-colored Prince Valiant pages are rare, but a few do exist. Page #551, August 31, 1947, is inscribed to King Features’ Comics Editor, Brad Kelly and his wife; thanking them for hosting a Natal Day Party in Arn’s honor.

You will be able to see every pencil mark, and red line just as it appears on the original. The main article also includes a humorous, never-reprinted photo from that legendary Natal Day Party featuring Hal with Brad Kelly, Bob Ripley, and Arthur “Bugs” Baer.

There is also a reference photo of Hal’s model for King Aguar, an unpublished camping cartoon from 1914, many unpublished photos from the Foster family album, a never-reprinted color Val piece from 1947’s “Sing Along With King at Christmas,” Arn’s “Birth Announcement,” and a Canadian Mountie painting.

Hal Foster's masterpiece of adventure enters its second decade as Valiant and Aleta journey to "The New World," a 16-month epic that allows Foster to draw some of his spectacular native Canadian backgrounds, and during which Aleta gives birth to Arn and acquires her Indian nurse, Tillicum. Most of the rest of the book is taken up with the action-packed five-month sequence "The Mad King," during which Val, back at Camelot, confronts the evil, fat little King Tourien of Cornwall.

This volume is rounded off with an essay by Foster scholar Brian M. Kane (The Prince Valiant Companion) discussing Foster's depiction of "Indians" as it relates to other interpretations of the times, accompanied by various graphic goodies such as a previously unpublished camping cartoon by Foster from circa 1915, some of Foster's Mountie paintings, Foster's own map of Val's voyage to/from the New World, and more rare photos and art.
